Day 1: Kolkata to Agra – Arrival and Local Exploration

Begin your trip by flying or taking a train to Agra. Once you have checked-in, have a rest after the long trip. Later in the afternoon, start sightseeing of Agra starting with its most recognized site, the Taj Mahal. Constructed by the Emperor Shah Jahan in honor of his wife Mumtaz Mahal, this white marble miracle is praised by its beauty and quality of work. Take time to explore its gardens and have a view of the calm environment. Visit the local markets later in Agra, which is also famous in terms of marble crafts, leather goods and sweets such as “Petha.”

Day 2: Explore Agra – Taj Mahal and Agra Fort, then Drive to Fatehpur Sikri

With a closer look at the heritage of Agra, you must proceed with the rest of your Agra tour after breakfast. See Agra Fort, a UNESCO world heritage that was the residence of Mughal emperors. You can also visit Mehtab Bagh which is the garden located on the other side of Yamuna River as well as offers a beautiful view of the Taj Mahal, especially during the day. Drive to Fatehpur Sikri. The city is a historical site constructed by Emperor Akbar and it is known as the city of red sandstones and unusual combination of Hindu and Islam architecture.

Spend all day in the wonders of Fatehpur Sikri, after breakfast. Visit the Buland Darwaza that is a massive gate which was built to honor the victory of Akbar and also the Jama Masjid, which is one of the largest mosques in India. You may also want to go to the tomb of Salim Chishti, and not just because it is a place of religious interest, but because it is very symbolic of how Akbar was. The Diwan-i-Khas also shows his style of governing, and is worth visiting. The still standing palaces and court yards here provide you with an idea of how life was in the Mughal period.
