Char Dham Yatra is regarded as one of the most sacred pilgrimages in India that attracts millions of loyalists every year. Char Dham is a phrase used to refer to the four sacred shrines known as Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath in the peaceful Himalayas of Uttarakhand. The pilgrims believe that the accomplishment of this journey cleanses sins and brings Moksha.
Char Dham Yatra tours are customised to give travellers a sense of spirituality and comfort. You need a cheap group tour, a helicopter adventure, a trip with the family, or a trip that suits you? There is a package that suits you. Each of the shrines bears a certain meaning: Yamunotri is the temple of Goddess Yamuna, Gangotri is the temple of River Ganga, Kedarnath is the temple of Lord Shiva, and Badrinath is the temple of Lord Vishnu. The pilgrimage normally begins at Haridwar, Rishikesh or Dehradun and covers the order Yamunotri → Gangotri → Kedarnath → Badrinath.
The well-planned Char Dham packages ensure that pilgrims experience more than just visiting the temples. The scenic beauty of the Garhwal Himalayas with the snow-capped mountains, running rivers and fertile valleys can also be enjoyed, thus making the trip a divine adventure.
Char Dham tour packages are of different types to meet different travel preferences and budgets.
Perfect when a person wants to enjoy a luxurious and time-saving pilgrimage. All four dhams are included in 3-5 days on helicopter tours starting at Dehradun or Haridwar.
Char Dham Yatra by Road:The most common and conventional way to do the yatra. The tours typically take 10–12 days and involve tours in comfortable buses or personal vehicles.
Do Dham Yatra Packages: Just ideal when time is limited. Either of these dhams (Kedarnath-Badrinath or Gangotri-Yamunotri) may be selected.
Luxury Char Dham Packages: Reside in luxury rooms and get personal services, easy transfers and helicopter tours when visiting the temples.
Family Char Dham Packages: Special packages that have a flexible touring programme, hotel comfort, and support for elderly tourists.
Spiritual and Senior Citizen Packages: The packages aim to ensure comfort during travel, limit the amount of walking required, and provide special assistance throughout the yatra.
The yatra is concentrated around the four main temples, although there are other sacred places and beautiful locations that contribute to the yatra's beauty and spirituality.
Yamunotri Temple (3,293m): This is dedicated to the Yamuna goddess and the origin of the Yamuna River. Make sure you go to the hot spring, called Surya Kund, and to Divya Shila.
Gangotri Temple (3,100 m): place of origin of the River Ganga. Some of the attractions located close to it are Bhagirathi Shila and Pandava Gufa.
Kedarnath Temple (3,583 m): It is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva, standing between the snow-white mountains on the banks of the Mandakini River.
Badrinath Temple (3,133 m): This is a temple devoted to Lord Vishnu. The colourful building is located between the Nar and Narayan ranges of the Alaknanda River.
Guptkashi: The place is known as the location of the Vishwanath Temple (oldest) and for spectacular mountain sightseeing.
Joshimath: This is a sacred town, which is the winter seat of Lord Badrinath and the entrance to Auli.
Uttarkashi: A peaceful town located by the banks of the Bhagirathi river, characterised by temples and ashrams.
Auli: This place is famous for skiing and the panoramic views of the Himalayas, a splendidly located place close to Badrinath.
The Char Dham Yatra is a typical event that starts from April to May and ends in October or November, just before Diwali. The most preferable time to visit will depend on the weather and the preference of crowds.
Summer (April to June): It is the most pleasant and favourite time, which is clear with easy access routes.
Monsoon (July to September): Avoid travel during this period due to the risk of landslides and heavy rainfalls.
Autumn (September to October): It is an ideal time to visit, as it is fresh after the monsoons and the people are fewer.
Note: The temples are closed in winter due to heavy snow.
You can get both luxurious hotels and cheap lodges on the route of the yatra:
Luxury seekers have an option to choose Char Dham helicopter packages that comprise the best hotels and VIP darshan services.
The Yatra does not focus much on shopping, although it is possible to purchase spiritual and local souvenirs:
Haridwar and Rishikesh: Holy books, rudraksha beads, brass idols, incense sticks, and spiritual music CDs.
Uttarkashi: Woolen fabrics, handmade jewelry, and wooden items.
Joshimath & Badrinath: Tibetan handicrafts, woollen shawls, and decorative herbs.
Guptkashi: religious objects, copperware, domestic souvenirs.
By Air: The closest airport is the Jolly Grant Airport (Dehradun). It has good connectivity with Delhi, Mumbai and other cities. It is also the location of helicopter services for the Char Dham Yatra.
By Train: The nearest railway stations include Haridwar and Rishikesh, which are linked to the major cities in India. Pilgrims normally begin their expedition at these stations, which serve as the origin.
By Road: Char Dham can be reached through well-established highways by Haridwar, Rishikesh, and Dehradun. There is frequent bus service and taxi service.
By Helicopter: Helicopter tours in luxury packages provide a tour of all four dhams in Dehradun, including accommodation and VIP darshan.
