The family yatra starts with a leisurely morning drive through Haridwar, Rishikesh or Dehradun to Barkot which is the base town of Yamunotri Dham. The picturesque road goes through Mussoorie, which has serene mountainous sights as well as good climate. A scheduled stop at Kempty Falls enables young children and the elderly to stretch and have a good time at the location. Barkot is situated along the Yamuna River and is perfect in terms of mild acclimatization. Once here, families are offered a nice stay in hotels, have a nice dinner and sleep.
At very early morning of the day, the families go to Janki Chatti or Phool Chatti, where the 6 km long trek to Yamunotri Temple starts. Family members can walk at a relaxed pace, or they can use ponies, palkis, or dandi services, which makes it convenient to the elderly and children. The walk is beautiful and inspirational. The next destination of the trip is the Uttarkashi, a calm town on the shores of the Bhagirathi River. The trip by road is picturesque and even on its way down to the village, one sees apple orchards and beautiful villages. After arrival, the holy Kashi Vishwanath Temple and Shakti Temple are visited by the families where prayers are conducted in a group that make Kashi Vishwanath Temple and Shakti Temple a strong place of worship. Uttarkashi is a peaceful place where one can get family rest. Dinner and stay at Uttarkashi.
The family leaves early in the morning to Gangotri Dham and passes by the spectacular Harsil Valley that is full of natural beauty. Families at Gangotri have a sacred bath in the Bhagirathi River, and take darshan at the Gangotri Temple, which is dedicated to Goddess Ganga. The calm environment renders it an inspirational place of worship to every age group. Darshan and then go back to Uttarkashi to stay overnight.
Families then take off after breakfast towards Guptkashi as a major stop on the way to Kedarnath Dham. The route goes through picturesque river valleys and mountain sceneries, where it has comfort stops. The Vishwanath Temple and Ardhanarishwar Temple are some of the places the families can visit on arrival. It is an evening of rest and preparation of the Kedarnath trek planned on the following day. In the mornings, the families go to Gaurikund where the 18 km walk to Kedarnath Temple starts. The family members can walk, rent ponies or palkis, or take the services of helicopters (depending on availability and weather) depending upon fitness and comfort. The journey is highly meaningful due to the spiritual charged environment. Following the darshan at Kedarnath Dham, families go down and stay overnight at Guptkashi or Sonprayag.
Families go to Badrinath Dham after breakfast through Joshimath. On arrival, holy dip in Tapt Kund, then darshan in the Badrinath Temple, which is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. The visit to Mana Village, Vyas Gufa and Bhim Pul may also be included in the tour to enhance the cultural and spiritual nature of the trip. Dining and accommodation at Badrinath.
On the last day, the families visit Badrinath Temple in the morning and then have a breakfast. Start the journey back to Haridwar, Rishikesh or Dehradun and the 8 Days Char Dham Yatra of Family is successfully completed. The trip ends with mutual spiritual memories and Godly blessings to the whole family.
The ideal period of a family Char Dham Yatra is between May and June and September and October when there is favorable weather and road transportation is safer. The monsoon months (July-August) are normally avoided in case of landslides whereas the winter months close the temples.
The families are expected to carry warm woollen clothes, thermal wear, waterproof jackets, comfortable trekking shoes, woollen socks, gloves, personal medicines, children essentials, first aid kit, sunscreen, sun glasses, power bank, torch, reusable water bottle, ID proofs and dry snacks.
The best means of conducting family tours is through private road transport like SUVs or tempo travellers since it is flexible and comfortable. Rail transport is until Haridwar or Dehradun, and then road transport. Kedarnath can be accessed by helicopter in order to create less physical load on the elders.
