Kedarnath Dham is located at an altitude of approximately 3583m (11755 feet) above the source of the Mandakini River in the Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand. The temple is located in a breathtaking albeit difficult terrain surrounded by snow-covered Himalayan mountains. The temple is closed about six months annually in winter, usually due to heavy snowfall, and is therefore one of the most challenging but most rewarding pilgrimages in India.
Kedarnath Temple is among the 12 Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva which is said to be self-manifested. According to Hindu culture, visiting Kedarnath will assist worshippers to purge the sins of the past and achieve liberation. The temple is also directly associated with the Pandavas who are believed to have been seeking the forgiveness of Lord Shiva in this place after the war of the Mahabharat.
Kedarnath Dham is thousands of years old. According to ancient scriptures, the first temple was constructed by the Pandavas and the current stone structure was repaired by Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th century. Although the temple has been challenged by natural calamities, such as the destructive floods of 2013, it has remained strong and has served as a source of divine protection and unaltered faith.
It will be announced on the auspicious day of Mahashivratri that the Kedarnath Temple will commence in 2026. The temple is traditionally opened in late April or early May and closed approximately in October November during Bhai Dooj.
Pilgrims ought to verify official dates prior to concluding travel plans.
