Uttarakhand starts its holy pilgrimage, the Yamunotri Dham Yatra 2026. The site is dedicated to Goddess Yamuna and it is the origin of the holy Yamuna River and one of the most important places of Char Dham Yatra worship in the Hindu culture. The trip is a picturesque road trip and then a short, yet spiritually significant hike in the western Garhwal Himalayas. Book Yamunotri Yatra
Yamunotri Dham is located in the Uttarakashi district of Uttarakhand and it is at an elevation of approximately 3,293 meters (10,804 feet). It is also honored as the birthplace of the Yamuna River, even though the actual one is a few kilometers away at Yamunotri Glacier. The temple is enclosed by the snow-capped mountains, thick trees, and thermal hot springs forming a peaceful and religious atmosphere. The first place that is visited in the traditional Char Dham circuit is Yamunotri.
It is the temple of Goddess Yamuna, who is the daughter of Surya Dev (God of the sun) and the sister of the God of Death, Yama. According to the Hindu belief, taking a bath in Yamuna waters keeps the devotees safe against untimely death as well as cleansing the soul. Pilgrims also believe that they can make their spiritual energy even by visiting Yamunotri and Gangotri. Yamuna symbolizes restraint and discipline, and Ganga is a symbol of liberation.
The history of Yamunotri is closely connected with the ancient Hindu scriptures and legends. The temple that is present was constructed in the 19th century by Maharani Guleria of Jaipur following a previous structure that had been destroyed by natural disasters. Yamunotri has been a place of worship, repentance and spiritual awakening over the centuries. The temple is an emblem of hope and strength even in the harshest weather.
The opening of the temple in 2026 will be announced during the auspicious day of Akshaya Tritiya. The temple is usually opened at the end of April or the beginning of May and closed at the end of October or November during Bhai Dooj.

The day to day routine of the Yamunotri Temple is based on the traditional practices.
The schedule can be changed based on the weather or rituals.

The roads are mostly well maintained during the high season but they may change at any time because of the rain or snow.
The most suitable time is in summer and early autumn when the weather and roads are not unstable.

Janki Chatti to Yamunotri is a trek, with a distance of about 6km in one direction.
The walk is fairly difficult and tarmac. Pony or palki services are also offered to pilgrims, particularly senior citizens and physically challenged ones.

Yamunotri can be reached by road until Janki Chatti and then a little walk to the temple.
It may begin at Haridwar, Rishikesh, Dehradun or Barkot. The shared jeeps, regular buses and personal taxis work during the yatra season. Most pilgrims like Rajasthan Cab choose the experienced operators of hill-routes, who are safe in the mountainous roads.
